How volume conversion works

Most volume conversions can be handled by converting the starting unit into millilitres, then converting that millilitre value into the target unit.

millilitres = original amount × ml per original unit converted value = millilitres ÷ ml per target unit

For example, one litre is 1,000ml. A UK pint is about 568.26ml, so litres to UK pints means converting litres to millilitres first, then dividing by 568.26.

UK volume notes

The UK often uses metric units such as millilitres and litres for products, labels and everyday measurements. Pints are still common for draught beer, cider and some milk references.

  • UK and US pints differ: a UK pint is about 568ml, while a US liquid pint is about 473ml.
  • Gallons differ too: UK gallons and US gallons are not the same.
  • Cooking can be different: cups and spoons are volume units, but cups-to-grams conversions depend on ingredient density.
Need cups to grams?

For ingredients like flour, sugar and butter, use the cooking unit converter because weight depends on density.

Rounding volume conversions

For everyday use, one or two decimal places is usually enough. For cooking, it is often better to round to a practical kitchen amount, such as the nearest teaspoon, tablespoon or 25ml step.

Practical note: Do not over-trust tiny decimals in recipes. A result like 236.59ml may simply mean “about 240ml” in a real kitchen.

Volume converter FAQs

Are UK and US pints the same?

Not accurately by volume alone. Cups to grams depends on the ingredient, so flour, sugar, butter and milk need different conversion values.
