Cooking Unit Converter

Convert common cooking units such as teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, millilitres, litres, grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds. For cups-to-grams conversions, choose the ingredient so the estimate uses a sensible density.

Convert cooking units

Choose an amount, the unit you have and the unit you want. Weight-to-volume and volume-to-weight conversions use the selected ingredient, because a cup of flour does not weigh the same as a cup of sugar or milk.

This calculator treats 1 teaspoon as 5ml, 1 tablespoon as 15ml and 1 cup as 240ml. Cups-to-grams results are estimates because ingredients have different densities.

How the cooking unit converter works

For simple volume conversions, the calculator converts everything through millilitres. For simple weight conversions, it converts everything through grams.

volume conversions: amount × unit ml value weight conversions: amount × unit gram value volume to weight: millilitres × ingredient density weight to volume: grams ÷ ingredient density

That means teaspoons to tablespoons are straightforward, but cups to grams need an ingredient choice.

Why cups to grams are not always exact

A cup is a volume measure. A gram is a weight measure. The same cup volume can weigh very differently depending on what is inside it, so a cup of flour, sugar, butter and milk should not all be treated as the same weight.

  • Flour: can vary depending on how tightly it is packed.
  • Sugar: usually weighs more per cup than flour.
  • Liquids: water and milk are close to 1g per ml.
  • Best practice: use grams for baking where precision matters.

Cooking unit converter FAQs

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?

There are 3 teaspoons in 1 tablespoon when using the common 5ml teaspoon and 15ml tablespoon measurements.

How many millilitres are in a cup?

This calculator uses 240ml as a practical metric cup estimate. Some recipes and regions use slightly different cup sizes, so always check the recipe source when precision matters.

Can I convert cups to grams exactly?

Not exactly without knowing the ingredient and how it has been packed. Cups measure volume, while grams measure weight.

What is the best unit for baking?

Grams are usually best for baking because they are more consistent than cups and spoons.
