Oven Temperature Converter

Convert oven temperatures between Celsius, Fahrenheit, fan oven and UK gas mark. Useful when a recipe uses a different oven scale from the one on your cooker.

Convert oven temperature

Enter the temperature you have, choose the oven scale, and the calculator will show the closest Celsius, Fahrenheit, fan oven and gas mark equivalents.

Use a number such as 180, 350 or 4.

Conventional oven180°CStandard Celsius setting.
Fan oven160°C fanUsually about 20°C lower.
Fahrenheit350°FRounded for recipes.

Conversion noteApproximateOvens vary by model and calibration.
Oven conversions are approximate. Fan ovens usually run hotter, so many recipes reduce the conventional Celsius temperature by about 20°C for fan-assisted ovens.

How the oven temperature converter works

The calculator converts through conventional Celsius first. Fahrenheit is calculated from Celsius, fan oven is estimated by reducing the conventional temperature, and gas mark is matched to the nearest common UK gas setting.

Fahrenheit = (Celsius × 9 ÷ 5) + 32 Celsius = (Fahrenheit - 32) × 5 ÷ 9 Fan oven estimate = conventional Celsius - 20°C Gas mark = nearest common UK gas mark table

Use the result as a practical cooking guide, not a laboratory measurement. Real ovens can run slightly hotter or cooler than the dial suggests.

Conventional oven vs fan oven

A fan oven circulates hot air, so food often cooks at a lower set temperature than in a conventional oven. A common rule of thumb is to reduce a conventional oven temperature by about 20°C for fan-assisted cooking.

  • 180°C conventional is commonly treated as about 160°C fan.
  • 200°C conventional is commonly treated as about 180°C fan.
  • Recipe timing can still change, so check food near the end of the suggested cooking time.

Example oven conversions

180°C is roughly 350°F, 160°C fan or gas mark 4.
200°C is roughly 400°F, 180°C fan or gas mark 6.
350°F is roughly 180°C, 160°C fan or gas mark 4.
Gas mark 7 is roughly 220°C, 200°C fan or 425°F.

Oven temperature FAQs

What is 180°C in gas mark?

180°C is commonly treated as gas mark 4. For a fan oven, the equivalent is often around 160°C fan.

What is 350°F in Celsius?

350°F is about 177°C, which is usually rounded to 180°C for everyday cooking.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9, divide by 5, then add 32.

Are oven temperature conversions exact?

No. The formula conversion is mathematical, but gas marks and fan oven equivalents are practical approximations. Ovens also vary in real-world temperature.
