How reading time is calculated

The calculator counts the words in your text, then divides that number by the selected reading speed. A 1,000-word article at 200 words per minute would take about 5 minutes to read.

Formula:
reading time in minutes = word count ÷ words per minute

Speaking time is calculated the same way, but with a slower words-per-minute setting because spoken delivery usually includes pauses, emphasis and breathing space.

Reading time calculator FAQs

How do you calculate reading time?

Divide the number of words by the reading speed in words per minute. For example, 800 words at 200 words per minute is about 4 minutes.

What is a normal reading speed?

For simple web content, 200 words per minute is a useful middle estimate. Dense, technical or unfamiliar material may be slower.

Is speaking time the same as reading time?

No. Speaking time is usually slower because spoken delivery includes pauses, emphasis and breathing space.

Can I enter a word count manually?

Yes. Select manual word count and enter the number of words if you do not want to paste the full text.
