Word Unscrambler
Enter letters and find possible English words, with optional filters for starting letters, ending letters and word length.
Unscramble your letters
The tool only uses each letter as many times as it appears in your input.
How the word unscrambler works
Enter the letters you have, then the tool looks for possible common English words that can be made from those letters. It checks each word against the letters available and avoids using the same letter more times than you entered it.
normalise letters = lowercase letters only
for each word in the list:
check word length
check starts with / ends with filters
check every letter is available
group matches by word length
sort longer words firstThis is designed as a quick helper for word ideas, writing prompts and casual word games. It is not an official Scrabble, Words with Friends or crossword dictionary.
How to use the filters
| Filter | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Starts with | Only shows words beginning with your chosen letters. | Use “st” to find words such as “stone” or “start”. |
| Ends with | Only shows words ending with your chosen letters. | Use “ed” to find words that end in “ed”. |
| Minimum length | Hides shorter words so you can focus on stronger matches. | Set 5+ to skip tiny two and three-letter words. |
| Exact length | Shows only words with one exact character length. | Use 6 letters for a fixed-length puzzle slot. |
Tips for finding better words
Start broad, then narrow the results. If you add too many filters at once, you may hide useful matches. For puzzles, try exact length first, then add a starting or ending letter only if you already know it.
- Try vowels first: words are easier to spot when you separate vowels and consonants mentally.
- Look for endings: common endings such as “ing”, “ed”, “er” and “ly” can reveal longer options.
- Check plurals carefully: some word games allow plural forms, while others may apply stricter rules.
- Use related tools: use the Word Counter when you need to count text, not rearrange letters.
Important limitations
This tool uses a built-in common-word list, so it may not include specialist terms, names, slang, abbreviations or every valid game word. Treat the result as a helpful starting point, not a final authority.
Working with full text instead?
If you need to count words, characters, sentences or reading time, use the wider text field in the Word Counter.
Word unscrambler FAQs
What is a word unscrambler?
A word unscrambler is a tool that takes a set of letters and finds possible words that can be made from those letters.
Can the same letter be used more than once?
Only if you enter that letter more than once. For example, “letter” contains two Ts and two Es, so words can use those letters twice.
Why are some words missing?
The tool uses a practical common-word list rather than a full official dictionary. Some rare words, names, slang and specialist terms may not appear.
Can I use this for official word games?
You can use it for ideas, but official games may use their own dictionaries and rules. Check the game’s accepted word list before relying on a result.
